Wedding Day, Elwick Church

The wedding of Agnes Ellen Christina Hutchinson and Thomas Albert Carter

It is April 30th 1940 and you are standing outside St Peter’s Church in Elwick Village, near Hartlepool. You are a guest at the wedding of Agnes Ellen Christina Hutchinson and Thomas Albert Carter. The bride is wearing her best dress for the occasion. She made it herself. Agnes is very good at dressmaking. Most people are, these days, as new clothes are so difficult to get. She would have liked a proper wedding dress but she couldn’t get hold of any parachute silk to make one. After the wedding everyone is going back to the bride’s mother’s house for sandwiches. All the family and friends have rallied round and given food and coupons for the reception. There won’t be time for a honeymoon, because Thomas is in the RAF and is being sent to Canada. Agnes will live with her parents until he comes home.
