Hartlepool
VE-Day party
VE-Day (Victory in Europe Day) was on Tuesday 8th May 1945 and marked the end of the war in Europe. Families gathered together around the wireless to listen to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, making a speech. People sang and danced and marched round the town to celebrate. Most streets held a party, with big wooden tables set out in the road and all the neighbours giving whatever food they had. This photograph shows the children of Grassmere Street in West Hartlepool, dressed in their best clothes for their street party.
Sadly, the war was not over for everyone. The war with Japan did not end until 15th August, so many men were still risking their lives abroad. Rationing did not end until several years after the war, so essential items like food and clothes were still in short supply.
