Sir Winston Churchill - visit to Swansea
The Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, is walking through the town of Swansea with his wife Clementine. The mayor is second from the right, and the American ambassador, Mr.Winant, is next to Lady Churchill. Churchill was not popular in South Wales because 20 years earlier as Home Secretary he had sent soldiers in during a miners’ strike.
His courage as leader during the war won most people around.
This visit on 11th April was part of a tour of towns that had suffered bombing. Churchill arrived in an open car, and then walked the worst areas. (The King and Queen had visited on 19th March.)
