Hartlepool
Mulgrave Castle, Hartlepool
Joan is seven years old and feeling very anxious. The war has only been on for a few weeks and already she has been sent away from home because her parents are afraid that Hartlepool will be a target for enemy attacks. Along with a group of other children from Lister Street School, Joan has been sent to Mulgrave Castle near Whitby in North Yorkshire. Now she is having her photograph taken and she has been made to stand beside a very grand lady in a fur collar. This is the Marchioness of Normanby, the owner of the castle. The children have been given a wing of the castle all to themselves and there are servants to look after them. They even have an enormous enamelled bath with hot running water. Joan has never seen anything like it. At home they have a tin bath that hangs on the kitchen wall. Even so, Joan is very lonely and homesick. She misses her family. The little boy who sleeps in the bed next to hers is only five and he is so frightened he wets the bed every night.
