Dynevor School burnt out
Grafton Maggs went to Dynevor School in Swansea. He was only 15 in 1941, but he said he was 17, and they let him join the Home Guard. The sergeant was his English teacher.
Almost straight away the town was bombed, and he was sent with his platoon to fight fires. They covered incendiary bombs with sandbags and reassured families who were petrified. Grafton says he didn’t feel at all frightened, it was all so exciting, and he was looking forward to telling all his friends in class the next day.
Two things spoilt it for him. When he got home at 2 o’clock in the morning his mother said he was never to do anything like that again – imagine him telling the officer – and there was no school the next day because, as you can see, Dynevor School was burnt out.
