Church street, Hartlepool

It is 1946 and you are looking down on Church Street from the top of Christ Church tower. Everything looks peaceful and quiet and normal. It is hard to imagine that only a short time ago things were very different. During the war there would have been hardly any cars because petrol was rationed. Windows would have tape criss-crossed over them to stop them shattering when the bombs dropped. Shops were nearly empty because everything was in short supply (in 1946 it is not much better – there is still rationing). People in the streets would all be carrying gas masks and listening for the air raid sirens. At night there wouldn’t be a single light showing: lights give the enemy aeroplanes a target to attack.
